MCU 005

 

Course Title:  MCU ENGLISH PROGRAM 005

Course Number: 005

Credits:  Non-credit

Course Duration: 30 hours (2 hours/class; once /week)

Course Start Date: Commencement of university semester.

Placement Test:  No test is given in placement of any MCU English Program courses.  All students must start at MCU 005 level.

Minimum Requirements: Students are required to complete MCU 005 with a passing grade of 60% before taking MCU 005.  For substitution of Doctoral English Examination, students must successfully pass MCU 005 with a passing grade of 60%.  Students may take MCU 005 as a preparation course for taking MCU Graduate English Test (Doctoral English Examination) without taking MCU 006.

Course Description: 

The course focuses on listening and speaking.  Students are encouraged to speak with fluency and accuracy as well as develop the skills of listening attentively and speaking effectively partly for communication in Buddhist topics of discussion as well as contemporary global issues which relate and may have an impact on Buddhism in particular. The course will provide practice in a meaningful context which can be extended outside the classroom.  Not only the course will cover communication among classmates, but students will learn how to speak in public in the most effective way and engage in interview process using the most efficient method in role play structure.  In addition, the students will learn basic reading and writing techniques for the use of speaking skill and as a background for MCU 006.

Additional texts may be required and students will be asked to purchase at the commencement of study.

Academic Objectives:

·         Students will learn grammar from basic to advance levels.  In addition, not only will general vocabulary be covered in this course, but religious vocabulary will also be comparatively enhanced.

 

·         Students will be capable of interacting critically and purposefully as a good listener.

 

·         Students will proficiently be able to speak and communicate with confidence and deliver oral presentation (public speaking) as well as interview role play.

 

Ethical Objectives:

·         Students will be aware and excel with great vision universally in today’s fast-paced changes and acquire ability in solving problems using English for their own benefit and for that of others.

·         Students will constantly be curious in listening mindfully in order to advance themselves which ultimately attain leadership with insight knowledge and spirituality.  This will help them to be helpful to others as a gesture of loving-kindness to other beings.

·         Students will possess morality, aspire themselves with profound virtue and integrity and sacrifice for the hospitality of other’s peace and happiness whilst value English as a language of communication.
